Missing Virgin Mary Statue On MySpace

Full story and MySpace profile:

The missing 5-foot Virgin Mary statue will again go on display at Calvary Cemetery this spring after being found wrapped in bags and hidden in a closet at a Mankato apartment this week.

A 20-year-old man faces theft charges in the case. The plaster statue was stolen in July from atop a monument marking a burial site for priests at the cemetery.

Cemetery caretaker Bud Johnson said he got an anonymous call two weeks ago with the name of the man who allegedly stole the statue. Johnson referred it to the Austin Police Department, then he did his own search on the Internet.

“He had a Web site on MySpace.com and I went on there and found out the suspect’s name and who his girlfriend was,” Johnson said. “Actually, it (the statute) appeared in the background of one of the photos.”

Investigators said the man may have stolen the statue as a gift for his girlfriend. The statue was valued at between $5,000 and $7,000. It was recovered Monday.

The statue was defaced and broken off its pedestal, but cemetery officials said it can be fixed and repainted.
