Myspace Meet Leads Death, Say Prosecutors

A 20-year-old man was ordered Wednesday to stand trial on a murder charge, despite a flip-flop from a key witness who previously incriminated him.

The witness, a 17-year-old girl who also faces charges in the case, told police in September that she last saw the murder victim leave her house on the night he died with accused killer Ivan Pierce.

But the girl, Alba Gonzalez, recanted during Pierce's preliminary hearing Wednesday, saying she only told police the incriminating story about Pierce to satisfy overzealous detectives who interrogated her.

"They were pressuring me," Gonzalez testified.

Even after the girl's reversal, a judge ruled at the end of the preliminary hearing that prosecutors have enough evidence to take Pierce to trial on charges he murdered 22-year-old Armando Leon Hernandez.

Hernandez, of Ontario, was found dead Sept. 23 of head and neck injuries at Memorial Park in Upland.

Prosecutors believe Hernandez hooked up with Gonzalez the night of his death after meeting her on MySpace.com, a social networking Web site.
