David Gharrett Arrested In Beating Death Of Girlfriend's Daughter

Illinois---- A Chenoa man was arrested after an investigation into the death of a 3-year-old girl.

David Gharrett, 23, is facing charges after an autopsy indicated that the child died of multiple blunt force injuries to her head and abdomen.

Destiny Marie Cox was taken by life-flight to the Children's Hospital in Peoria on April 29th. She died later that night.

Gharrett's one-year-old son has been taken into state custody. His girlfriend, Candis Ethridge, has been ordered to submit to a drug screening. She is the mother of Destiny and his son.

In 2009 and 2010, the state Department of Children and Family Services investigated allegations of abuse and neglect against Ethridge and her Gharrett involving Destiny, according to an agency spokesman Kendall Marlowe. Both complaints were ruled unfounded and in 2010 the family was offered services from DCFS but declined.

Gharrett is currently a guest in the McLean County jail and is expected to be formally charged later today.
